International Day of Deaf People: Listening, Communicating and Building a More Inclusive Society

Contáctenos

The International Day of Deaf People is an opportunity to raise awareness of people with deafness and hearing loss and, above all, to remember the importance of building a society in which communication is accessible to everyone.

Hearing loss can occur in different degrees and circumstances. In addition, the communication needs of deaf people or people with hearing difficulties are diverse, which means there is no single way to approach accessibility.

At Auz Audiology, in San Fulgencio, we would like to use this occasion to focus on the importance of awareness, prevention and the removal of communication barriers.

The Importance of Accessible Communication

Many of the difficulties experienced by people with hearing problems are not caused exclusively by hearing loss, but by barriers in their surroundings.

Having a conversation in a place with too much noise, speaking without maintaining eye contact or having information available only through audible alerts are situations that can make communication more difficult.

Small changes can help improve it. Speaking while looking at the person, articulating naturally, reducing background noise whenever possible and accompanying certain messages with visual information are some simple measures that promote more accessible communication.

Hearing Loss Can Occur at Any Stage of Life

Although we often associate hearing problems with ageing, hearing can be affected at different stages of life.

Continuous exposure to loud sounds, certain medical conditions, genetic factors or simply the passage of time can cause changes in our ability to hear.

For this reason, prevention and hearing checks play an important role. Detecting possible hearing loss allows us to understand its characteristics and explore the different options available.

Technology, Accessibility and Hearing Solutions

Technological advances have made it possible to develop numerous tools designed to facilitate communication.

Depending on each person’s needs, hearing aids, implants, assistive listening systems, subtitles, visual alerts and other accessibility solutions may be used.

However, technology is only one part of the journey. Social awareness remains essential for creating truly inclusive environments.

A Day to Listen in a Different Way

The International Day of Deaf People also invites us to reflect on something that those of us who hear correctly may take for granted: our ability to communicate with others.

At Auz Audiology in San Fulgencio, we want to contribute to greater awareness of hearing health and the needs of people with hearing loss.

Creating a more accessible society begins with understanding that there are different ways of hearing and communicating.
